How does a semipro soccer club get sponsors in the United States?

By Rafael Cid, Director of Sports Marketing.

By selling an audience instead of asking for support. A sponsor pays to reach the people who come to your matches and follow your club, so the work is counting that audience, listing what you can deliver, pricing it and proving it ran.

What is a sponsor actually buying?

Access to your audience. A local business does not sponsor a club because the club needs uniforms. It sponsors because the people in your stands and on your social accounts are people it wants as customers. Clubs that cannot describe their audience rarely close a deal, which is why the Sponsorship Collective calls missing audience data the mistake that kills sponsorship programs.

For a club in a Hispanic community the audience is an advantage. Nielsen research shows that Hispanic sports fans are 11% more likely than the general population to buy a brand after seeing its sponsorship, 39% more likely to recommend a sponsoring company and 37% more likely to feel loyal to it.

Step 1: count your audience

Write down numbers you can defend. Average attendance per home match, counted and not estimated. Home matches per season. Followers on each social account and the average reach of a post. Families in your youth teams or academy. The size of any email or WhatsApp list. Then add what you know about who they are: neighborhoods, language, age.

Step 2: list what you can deliver

An inventory is a list of specific rights, each one deliverable and countable: front of jersey, back of jersey, sleeve, training kit, field banners, public address reads, matchday naming, a table at home matches, sponsored social posts, mentions to your email or WhatsApp list, and naming of youth clinics. If you cannot guarantee it for the whole season, leave it off.

Step 3: put a price on each item

Sponsors trust a rate card more than a negotiation. Price each asset for a full season and show the prices in your deck. Our guide to pricing soccer club sponsorship explains three ways to get to a number you can defend.

Step 4: go to the categories that already advertise to your fans

Start with the local businesses that already spend money to reach Hispanic households in your city: law firms, insurance agencies, auto dealers and repair shops, clinics and dentists, restaurants, grocery stores, roofing and home services, and real estate. National brands buy the same audience at the top of the sport. The Mexican national team's partners in the United States include a money transfer company, a motor oil and a delivery app. Offer category exclusivity, meaning one advertiser per business category per club per season. It costs you nothing and it is often the reason a business says yes.

Step 5: prove it ran and renew early

Send every sponsor a dated photo of their placement at a home match, with the attendance for that date. Proof is what turns a first deal into a renewal, and a renewal takes less work than finding a new sponsor.

Where does HRM fit?

In most semipro clubs one person does all of this, and the UPSL alone reports more than 900 teams competing for the same local budgets. Hispanic Retail Media (HRM) is a sales house for clubs in Hispanic communities. A club signs a representation mandate, gives HRM the rights it wants represented with no listing fee and sets its own prices. HRM finds the sponsor and closes the deal. Production of branded material is available if the club wants it, but it is not part of every deal. The club is paid its share as soon as it approves a paid order, with HRM's commission already deducted.

Questions

What do sponsors look for in a semipro soccer club?

An audience they want as customers and proof that the club can reach it: counted attendance, social reach, who the fans are, and specific placements with prices.

Which businesses sponsor local Hispanic soccer clubs?

Start with businesses that already advertise to Hispanic households: law firms, insurance agencies, auto dealers, clinics, restaurants, grocery stores, home services and real estate.

What is category exclusivity?

One advertiser per business category per club per season. A club can offer it at no cost, and it is often what closes the deal.

Does it cost money to list a club on HRM?

There is no listing fee. The club sets its own prices and HRM keeps a commission on each sale, set in the club's mandate and shown before signing.
