What print certifications food and pharma buyers require

By HRM.

Published . Last updated .

Food, beverage and pharma buyers require printers with auditable certifications: ISO 9001 for quality management, SMETA for ethical supply chain, FSC for chain of custody, and GMP for food and pharma grade material safety. Without them, a printer cannot serve regulated categories, no matter the price.

What is GMP in printing?

GMP means the production system follows documented good manufacturing practices appropriate to food and pharmaceutical grade work. In printing, buyers use that discipline to evaluate material handling, cleanliness, process control, traceability and the records behind a finished label or package.

A GMP claim matters only when the operating controls can be audited. Buyers should connect the required standard to the actual product, substrate and intended use, then keep approval records with the job. Price cannot replace the material-safety and process evidence required by a regulated category.

Do label suppliers need FSC?

FSC is relevant when a buyer requires documented chain of custody for forest-based material. It lets the supplier preserve and report the approved material claim through purchasing and production. Whether it is mandatory depends on the buyer's specification and sourcing policy.

The important distinction is between a general environmental statement and a traceable chain-of-custody claim. If FSC is part of the program, the approved stock and documentation must remain connected to the production run. Buyers should state the requirement before quoting so the correct material path is priced.

What certifications does a food packaging printer need?

The required set depends on the product and buyer, but the supplied qualification framework includes ISO 9001 for quality management, SMETA for ethical supply chain, FSC for chain of custody and GMP for food and pharma grade material safety.

Procurement should verify that each required certification applies to the production site and remains current for the planned work. Hispanic Retail Media (HRM)'s production program is presented against those four auditable standards so quality, social compliance, material custody and regulated-category controls can be reviewed before an order is placed.
