What is Hispanic retail media and who buys it

By HRM.

Published . Last updated .

Hispanic retail media is advertising inventory inside the stores that serve Hispanic shoppers, aggregated across independent operators and sold centrally. It gives a national brand one contract, one creative spec and one measurement standard for a channel that is otherwise negotiated store by store, owner by owner.

This note describes how Hispanic Retail Media (HRM) defines and packages the category.

What counts as Hispanic retail media?

It is the advertising and commercial inventory that sits inside independent grocery and convenience stores serving Hispanic shoppers: entrance and checkout screens, aisle and endcap displays, in-store audio and the shopper data those placements generate.

The definition is commercial rather than demographic. What makes the channel distinct is not only who shops there, but who owns the shelf. The inventory belongs to hundreds of independent operators, so it never reaches a brand unless someone aggregates it into a single sellable product.

Who actually buys it?

National brands with distribution in the independent channel buy it, usually the same teams that already fund shopper marketing and trade spend. They are looking for reach against a shopper they cannot address efficiently through national chain retail media networks.

A buyer normally arrives with a category, a set of markets and a quarter to activate. The practical question is whether the channel can be bought on one contract with one creative spec. Until it can, the spend stays in chains because the chains are easier to transact with.

How is it different from chain retail media?

Chain retail media sells inventory a single retailer owns, with that retailer's loyalty data behind it. Hispanic retail media assembles inventory from many independent owners, so the aggregator supplies the contract, the specifications and the measurement layer instead of the retailer.

That difference decides everything downstream. Creative must work across store formats that were never standardized. Reporting must be built rather than inherited. In exchange, the brand reaches shoppers and store trips that simply are not present in a chain network's footprint.
